Above-Ground Pools vs. Inground Pools
An honest, side-by-side comparison for Arizona homeowners — cost, lifespan, resale value, durability, and desert suitability — from a licensed Phoenix pool builder with 20,000+ pools behind us since 2001.
Both pool types will cool you off on a 110° afternoon. But they are very different investments. Above-ground pools win on upfront price and speed; inground concrete pools win on nearly everything that matters over the life of a home — durability, customization, resale value, and the years you actually get to enjoy them. Here is the fair comparison, and why, for a permanent Arizona home, we believe inground wins.
Above-ground vs. inground pools at a glance
| Factor | Above-Ground Pool | Inground Concrete Pool |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lowest — often a few thousand dollars | $38,000–$60,000, or $60,000+ with features |
| Typical lifespan | Roughly 7–15 years | Shell lasts 50+ years; finish renewed periodically |
| Customization | Preset sizes and basic shapes | Any shape, size, depth, and feature |
| Durability in AZ | Liner and walls degrade in sun & heat | Rigid shell built for desert heat and soils |
| Home resale value | Usually neutral to negative | Adds lasting value as a permanent feature |
| Installation time | Days | Several weeks (custom construction) |
| Look & feel | Visible walls, above the yard | Seamless, integrated backyard resort |
Ranges reflect typical metro Phoenix projects; every pool is quoted individually. See our Arizona pool cost guide.
Above-ground pools: honest pros and cons
Above-ground pools are the budget, fast-install option. They come in soft-sided and framed-wall styles, go up in days, and cost the least to buy. For a short-term renter, a temporary setup, or a very tight budget, they can make sense.
The trade-offs are real, though. Walls and liners break down under the Arizona sun, so most above-ground pools last only about 7 to 15 years. They can’t be deeply customized, they sit above the yard rather than blending into it, and — importantly in Phoenix — they tend to be neutral or even negative for home resale. Many buyers ask for them to be removed before closing.
Inground concrete pools: honest pros and cons
An inground gunite pool costs more upfront and takes weeks to build. There is no way around that — it is real custom construction. That is the honest downside.
What you get in return is a pool that lasts decades, fits your exact yard and style, and becomes a genuine feature of your home. The concrete shell can last 50-plus years; only the interior finish is periodically renewed. You can add spas, tanning ledges, water features, and any shape you like. And in the Phoenix market, a well-built inground pool is a selling point, not a liability. Explore the options on our inground pools and types of inground pools pages.
How the two compare on what matters
Cost over time
Above-ground wins on day one. But replacing a $5k pool every decade can cost more over 30 years than one concrete pool that is simply resurfaced.
Lifespan
About 7–15 years for above-ground vs. a 50+ year concrete shell. It is the single biggest long-term difference.
Resale value
Above-ground is usually neutral or a negative at sale; a quality inground pool is a Phoenix selling feature.
AZ durability
Sun and heat degrade above-ground liners and walls; a rigid concrete shell is engineered for the desert.
Customization
Preset kits vs. any shape, depth, and feature — spas, ledges, and water features included.
Look & feel
Walls above the yard vs. a seamless, integrated backyard that looks like it belongs.
Which is better for Arizona?
For a temporary situation or the tightest budget, an above-ground pool is a reasonable short-term choice. But for a permanent Arizona home, the math and the experience both favor inground concrete. Our climate is hard on the materials above-ground pools are made of, the swim season here runs most of the year so the pool gets heavy use, and Phoenix buyers expect and value a real inground pool. You enjoy it longer, it holds up better in the heat and soil, and it adds to your home instead of becoming something you eventually tear out and haul away.
And because an inground concrete pool is resurfaced rather than replaced, a single well-built pool can outlast two or three generations of above-ground pools — which changes the cost picture over the decades you own your home.
