We Fix Ugly Pools® has been designing, building, and remodeling pools across the Phoenix metro since 2001, with more than 20,000 pools built and renovated and 700+ projects completed every year. We build new inground pools and transform tired ones throughout Surprise and the Northwest Valley.
A local pool builder for Surprise and the Northwest Valley
Surprise has grown from a quiet crossroads into one of the fastest-growing cities in the West Valley, and that means two kinds of pool projects: brand-new custom pools for new-build and move-up homes, and remodels of the aging pools in established neighborhoods. We do both. As a licensed Arizona pool builder, we handle everything from the first design sketch to the final startup — excavation, steel, plumbing, gunite shell, decking, tile, coping, water features, equipment, and interior finish.
We build and remodel pools throughout the Northwest Valley, including Surprise, Peoria, Sun City, Waddell, Litchfield Park, El Mirage, and Wittmann. We Fix Ugly Pools is family-owned, and we are a licensed, bonded, and insured Arizona contractor. Our ROC licenses are KA5-275609 (residential), KB2-304269 (commercial), and KA5-353555. For new construction specifically, we also build under our dedicated new-pool brand, webuildnewpools.com.
Custom pools designed for your Surprise backyard
No two yards in Surprise are the same — lot sizes, view fences, HOA setbacks, and sun exposure all shape what will work. We start with a free design consultation, walk your yard, and design a pool around how you actually want to use it: a clean modern geometric pool, a resort-style freeform with a tanning ledge, a spillover spa, or a full backyard resort with fire and water features.
Every build uses quality materials and proven Arizona construction methods, because a pool here has to stand up to 115° summers, hard water, and shifting desert soils. Explore our custom pools and inground pool options, or see how we work as an Arizona pool builder.

Startup & handoff
Equipment startup, water balancing, and a walk-through so you know how to run your pool.
How much does a new pool cost in Surprise, AZ?
Most new custom inground pools we build in the Phoenix metro start around $38,000 to $60,000 for the pool itself. Adding a spa, extensive decking, raised walls, and fire and water features can push a full backyard project $60,000 and up, depending on size, finish, and how much hardscape you include. Because every yard, soil condition, and feature list is different, the only accurate number is the one you get after a design consultation — we price your actual pool, not a generic average.
Already have a pool that needs work instead of a new build? Remodels are far less than new construction: a typical resurface-and-tile remodel runs about $8,000 to $15,000, while adding features during a remodel runs about $15,000 to $30,000. See our Arizona pool remodel cost guide for a full breakdown.
Built for Surprise soil, sun, and hard water
Building a pool in the Northwest Valley is not the same as building one in a milder climate, and a local builder matters. Much of the area around Surprise, Waddell, and Wittmann sits on variable desert soils that swell and shrink with moisture, so the shell has to be engineered and steeled to handle that movement without cracking. Summer temperatures that top 115° expand decks and coping all day and contract them at night, which is why we detail expansion joints carefully and recommend cooler-to-the-touch deck surfaces and light-colored coping.
Surprise is also hard-water country. Heavy calcium in the water is tough on interior finishes and tile, so the finish you pick and how the pool is started up and balanced in the first month have a real effect on how long everything lasts and how good it looks. Because we have built and renovated more than 20,000 pools across the Valley since 2001, we build with those local realities in mind from day one — not as an afterthought.
New pool or remodel — which is right for your home?
If you are buying or already own a new-construction home in Surprise with a bare backyard, a new custom pool lets you design the entire space the way you want it. If you have an older home with a dated or failing pool, a remodel usually delivers the biggest visual change for the smallest investment — a fresh interior finish, new waterline tile, updated coping, and modern equipment can make a 20-year-old pool look and run like new for a fraction of new-build cost.
We are genuinely set up to do both, so our recommendation is honest rather than one-size-fits-all. During your free consultation we will tell you plainly whether your money is better spent on a new build or a remodel, and we will put real numbers against each option. Interior finishes built for Arizona water
The finish you choose sets the look, feel, and lifespan of your pool. Standard plaster lasts about 5–7 years before it needs a refresh. Upgraded quartz finishes last roughly 12–18 years, and premium pebble finishes last about 25–30 years — the longest-lasting option and a favorite in the Valley’s hard water.
We’ll walk you through colors and finishes in person so your pool water reads the exact shade of blue you want, and so the finish holds up to Surprise’s hard water and intense sun for years.
